Hippocrates (460-370 B.C.) was one of the first to realize what many now recognize—that cow’s milk can cause gastrointestinal distress. Now, growing numbers of health experts are starting to catch wind of the link between consumption of dairy products and excess gas in cheese and milk consumers. An estimated 30 million people in the U.S. suffer from lactose intolerance, a condition that can cause gas, nausea, cramps, bloating, and diarrhea.

Lactose intolerance has no gender or race barriers—adults and children, men and women, Caucasians and African Americans—people from all walks of life can suffer symptoms after consuming dairy products. In fact, the Journal of the American Dietetic Association reported in 1996 that 75 percent of the world’s population is lactose intolerant. In America alone, 70 percent of African and Native Americans, 95 percent of Asian Americans, 50 percent of Mexican Americans, and 15 to 20 percent of Caucasian Americans have difficulty in digesting lactose, which often causes all the symptoms mentioned above.

Untold numbers of people who haven’t been diagnosed as "lactose intolerant" routinely choose antacids for "dessert" after indulging in cheese pizzas or double-tall lattes. A better alternative would be to give the bottle the boot—and go for soy alternatives!
